From the Desk of Mayor David West
November E-Newsletter 2024

Dear Neighbours,

It has been another busy month in Richmond Hill and I have been happy to meet so many residents at local events. Thank you for taking the time to attend and to get involved in your city.

It has been my pleasure to accept several invitations to promote our great city this past month and I am excited that our reputation is growing, in a good way! Read on to learn more…

As we acknowledge the halfway mark in this term, which runs from 2022-2026, I continue to be so honoured to serve this community. I have always seen the many strengths of our city and I am committed to continue working hard to increase our opportunities and to address the challenges municipalities face. The Mayor is the head of Council, but all this work is a collaborative team effort and I want to acknowledge the many comments I have received from residents over the past two years regarding the collaborative relationship Council continues to have this term. The eight other voices on Council are also committed to making our community and our home the very best it can be.

Like cities and municipalities around the province, Richmond Hill is facing real frustration addressing the crisis of homelessness, mental health, and health care, which are all provincially funded. Recently 28 of Ontario’s biggest city mayors passed a strong message on how we collectively need to solve this crisis. As provincial and federal political headlines begin to dominate our newsfeeds, I assure you that my advocacy work will continue to ensure that Richmond Hill’s voice is heard at Queen’s Park and in Ottawa.

I hope to see you soon.

Sincerely,

Mayor David West
City of Richmond Hill

Happy Halloween Richmond Hill

News from the Office of the Mayor

Speaking at United Nations Headquarters
19th Annual Global Forum on Human Settlements

On October 24, I spoke at the Global Forum on Human Settlement in New York at the invitation of the Urban Economy Forum who recently named Richmond Hill the first Frontrunner City in Canada. I was asked to share the local perspective on topics related to the UN Sustainable Development Goals and discuss the approach we are taking in Richmond HIll.

Of course, it was an honour to be asked and I was proud our city has achieved this level of global recognition for the hard work that our City staff, committed residents, and community groups continue to do. While I listened to other delegates, I realized that Richmond Hill has really important knowledge to share – I was one of the representatives who spoke about reinforcing local actions, while many presenters were focused on high level policy.

The Federation of Canadian Municipalities has always recognized the importance of municipalities when addressing climate change -“In Canada, municipalities have influence over roughly 50 percent of the nation’s Green House Gas emissions and the ways we live, work and play can have a huge impact. By matching the federal government’s emissions reduction targets of 40 to 45 percent below 2005 levels by 2030, municipalities alone could get us halfway to Canada’s emissions reduction target of net zero by 2050.” (Municipalities for Climate Innovation Program)

This reinforces how critical our individual and collective efforts are and as I talked about our growing tree canopy, our recycling and waste diversion, our HERO education webinars, and our goal of Net Zero by 2050, what I was most excited to share was our resident engagement, our fantastic volunteerism for the annual Clean up Green Up, and the many small but important grass roots actions that our community undertakes, everyday.

Stronger Together - Building for Today and Tomorrow

On October 8 I delivered my annual State of the City address to a fine audience of Richmond Hill business leaders and community members.

What I love about this event is the chance to share successes, challenges, and plans with our community. As Mayor, I continue to be proud of the work that is getting done in Richmond Hill, and I see the opportunities that exist for even more promising projects to make our city the best it can be.

Thank you to all the attendees and our hosts, the Richmond Hill Board of Trade. There is a video of my address available both on my website and on the City of Richmond Hill’s YouTube page.

Celebrating 50 years of Growth and Innovation

It was an honour to visit Apotex and congratulate them on both their 50th Anniversary and the good news of their continued growth and expansion in community.

This Canadian-based global health company announced they are expanding their Richmond Hill facility, adding two new specialized production lines. The $70 million investment will help build out the company’s local manufacturing capacity while creating more than 70 jobs once at capacity for the local economy.

Great companies continue to choose Richmond Hill, bringing good quality jobs and opportunities for our residents to live, work, and play right here.

You can attend Committee of the Whole meetings and Council Public Meetings in person at City Hall Council Chambers, watch live from home, or watch the recordings of any meetings you missed at the link below.

Thank you for your civic engagement

Carbon Monoxide Awareness Week in Ontario:
Stay Safe and Informed

Carbon Monoxide Awareness Week in Ontario, running from November 1st to 7th. This year marks the 10th anniversary of the provincial legislation mandating CO alarms in homes, a milestone that brings a critical reminder: alarms installed a decade ago are now expired and need replacement.

What is Carbon Monoxide? CO is a colorless, odorless, and tasteless gas that can be deadly. It is produced by burning fuels such as gas, oil, wood, and propane.

Prevention Tips:

  • Install CO Alarms: Place CO alarms outside sleeping areas, for added protection install them on every level of your home. If your alarms were installed following the 2014 legislation, it’s time to replace them with new ones. Test them regularly to ensure they are functioning correctly.
  • Maintain Appliances: Have your heating system, water heater, and any other gas, oil, or coal-burning appliances serviced by a qualified technician annually.
  • Ventilate Properly: Ensure that all fuel-burning appliances are properly vented and never use generators, grills, or other gasoline-powered equipment indoors or in enclosed spaces.

Spread the word to friends, family, and neighbors to help protect our communities from carbon monoxide dangers. Remember, if your CO alarms were installed in 2014, it’s time for an upgrade!
