The plans for the next Mill Pond Splash are well underway. The date has been set, it will take place on Sunday June 5th. All the usual activities that make the Mill Pond Splash such a popular event are planned. There will be live animal demonstrations, environmentally focussed activities, tree planting, and great music and food. The Splash has become one of the GTA’s best family Oriented Celebrations of nature and the Don River Watershed.
We are also hoping to add a new event to the Splash next year. Councillor Hogg has made contact with a group affiliated with World Wildlife Fund to bring a “Kids Run for Nature” as a part of the activities that will be taking place at next year’s Splash. This group, along with members of the Toronto Region Conservation Association, Councillor Hogg and myself toured the Mill Pond in November to help set the run course.
It was interesting to meet the two young ladies on the right of the photo below. They are grade 4 students that decided one day that they needed to do something to help wildlife. With some help from their parents, they founded the Kids Run for Nature in Toronto last year. They are now looking to expand this program to other Canadian communities like ours. I was quite impressed to know that the founders of this organization are 9 years old! The lesson – do not underestimate the power and passion of young people!
