Mayor David West and Council will be raising the Lion and Sun flag in solidarity and to show our continued support of the Iranian community, in partnership with our Iranian leaders, Honourable Ali Ehsassi, Minister Michael Parsa and Former Minister Dr. Reza Moridi.

It is important that we take this action at this time because here in Richmond Hill, our friends and neighbours are being deeply impacted by the atrocities that are happening in Iran and the Lion and Sun flag is a very important symbol for our Iranian diaspora.  Richmond Hill has stood in solidarity throughout the Women Life Freedom movement, in support of the victims of Flight PS752, and most recently with the #FreeIran protests.  We will continue to do meaningful things that are long lasting.

The raising of the Lion and Sun flag is another action in our ongoing of support of our Iranian community who are hurting and have asked for this specific action.

The flag raising will take place at:

• Richmond Green Park, 1300 Elgin Mills Road East, Richmond Hill, Ontario outside by the flagpole.
• Thursday, February 5, 2026 at 6 p.m.
• Please dress for the weather – this is an outdoor event
