I am pleased to report that Council recently denied the demolition application for the former historic Jefferson Schoolhouse. The motion that passed also directed staff to work with the owner of this Heritage Designated Property to explore all avenues available to save this important building.
It has always been clear to me that the best way to save iconic and important buildings like the Jefferson Schoolhouse is to restore them, and include/incorporate them into a new development with a new revitalized use.
This strategy has been done successfully all over the world in order to save unique landmark buildings. As a result important historic buildings are able to again provide unique pubic spaces, while respecting our community’s built heritage while adding to the unique character of a City.
