A Farmers’ Market for Richmond Hill Village Core

I am very excited to announce that we will be launching a Farmers’ Market at the Richmond Hill Centre for the Performing Arts South Parking Lot each Saturday in July, August, and September from 8AM-1PM. This market will feature locally grown food, entertainment, and homemade crafts for residents to enjoy.

Promoting local food is one of goals that Richmond Hill  has set out in Greening the Hill, our new environmental strategy – “Create opportunities for access to local food through initiatives such as community gardens and support for Farmers’ markets.”

On a personal note I have been looking forward to this Market coming to our Historic Village Core since I first heard about the idea in 2007. It will be a great opportunity for residents who live in the area to walk to the Market to buy farm fresh produce, and it will be one more reason for people to come into the Historic Village Core to shop and explore all that this area of Town has to offer. It is also a great opportunity for neighbours to come together in a fun and casual setting to get to know each other and socialize.

Aside from the practical aspects of getting delicious fresh locally grown food – a Farmers’ Market provides an opportunity for people to become more in touch with where their food comes from, and to meet the people who have a hand in producing it. This is one of the many benefits of this project.

I am thankful for the support that our Town staff and the Business Improvement Area Board of Directors has given to this initiative. I can’t wait until opening day July 5th. We will have an Official Opening Ceremony on Saturday July 5th at 10AM.
