From the Desk of Mayor David West
May E-Newsletter 2026

Dear Neighbours,

Happy Spring! It may seem like it is off to a slow start with this cool weather, but the busy calendar of great seasonal activities and events says otherwise! Enjoy the wide range of celebrations of spring happening in our city this month – gardening, outdoor activities, and charity walk events are in full swing as we make the most of the better weather.

May 1-7 is National Youth Week, and if you have a young person in your life, please encourage them to get involved in our city – there are so many different events and activities to choose from. One City program that I am a big fan of is the Youth Action Committee, open to youth in grades 6-12. The deadline for applications is May 22nd at noon. Teen Activities – Youth Action Committee – City of Richmond Hill

Of course, another opportunity for Richmond Hill youth that is close to my heart is my own “Mayor for a Day” contest but don’t delay, the contest closes Sunday night!

I look forward to seeing you around the city!

Mayor David West
City of Richmond Hill

3rd Annual Mayor for a Day Contest

Thank you to the many applicants who have taken the time to enter the contest! If you know a Richmond Hill resident in grades 5 through 8 who has not yet applied, it isn’t too late – the contest is still open for a few days!

Submit an application on my website by Sunday May 3, 2026 at midnight to enter the Mayor for a Day contest. This is such a terrific opportunity to get our youth interested and engaged in their city – I don’t think we can start building civics, citizenship, and concern about local issues too early!

Community Safety

I want Richmond Hill residents to know that I hear your concerns about safety in our city. As your Mayor, I am listening and working to do all I can to ensure our city is a safe one.

This is a regular column added to my monthly e-newsletter offering insights from my close working relationship with the York Region Police District 2.

Are you interested in gaining insight into policing in your community? Are you curious about what police officers are up to in your neighbourhood? The York Regional Police have created a Community Safety Data Portal that can help residents learn more about the crime trends in their neighbourhood. That knowledge combined with the crime prevention tactics shared by both the YRP and Neighbourhood Watch can contribute to increased safety in our city.

If you would like to learn more, register to attend the online training:

Community Safety Data Portal Training Academy
Thursday, May 28, 2026 12:00 pm – 1:00 pm

Join members of the Business Intelligence and Data Analytics Unit for a Level 1 training session on the Community Safety Data Portal. Training will cover the standard functionality of all applications within the portal. Participants will leave better equipped to keep their families and communities safe.

Trade Mission to Germany -
Attracting Business to Richmond Hill

As Mayor and as a past small business owner for most of my life, I recognize the value to a community of a strong, innovative and resilient local economy. Now more than ever, we need to do all we can to deliver an environment that fosters innovative and dynamic companies that employ our very highly skilled Richmond Hill residents. This gives more people a chance to work closer to where they live, it fosters all the economic spin offs available to communities with high value businesses, it reduces the reliance on the residential tax base, and most of all helps creates the best, most dynamic community possible.

In April, we travelled to Germany to represent Richmond Hill on an important Trade Mission, continuing to showcase our city at key, strategic meetings and events with the goal of positioning Richmond Hill as the ‘go to destination’ for the innovative business we want to attract.

We attended Hannover Messe, the world’s largest Industrial Technology Trade Fair, representing Richmond Hill on the world stage. This particular trade fair has resulted in $500M in increased trade for Canada over the past three years. We participated to strengthen our Richmond Hill economic ecosystem and at the same time to represent as a part of a large Canadian contingent who recognizes Europe as an important and reliable trading partner that Canada wants to further leverage.

Building relationships is so important and I have worked hard to grow the recognition of Richmond Hill abroad and here at home. During the Trade Mission, I met with MPP Victor Fedeli, Minister of Economic Development and Job Creation and MP Melanie Joly, Minister of Industry, and also represented York Region on the NGen Conversation Podcast in support of York Region Economic Development.

While in Germany, I signed a letter of intent with the Augsburg Innovations Park, a group providing innovation incubation for technology based businesses who will be a welcome partner as we continue work on our own Sustainability Transitions Accelerator of Canada (STAC), a new Richmond Hill based initiative in partnership with the United Nations University Institute for Water, Environment and Health (UNU-INWEH). Through STAC, Richmond Hill will help local and Ontario businesses prepare for international markets by connecting them with global expertise, training and partnerships. The program supports companies working in areas such as clean technology, climate resilience, water and health solutions, helping them diversify beyond traditional markets, advance commercialization and build international connections that translate into growth, investment and jobs here at home.

On behalf of our great city I am always proud of Richmond Hill but on Trade Missions like this where I have an opportunity to promote my home community and the specific things that make Richmond Hill a great place to live and do business, I could not be happier to be Mayor of our home of Richmond Hill.

One of my priorities this term of council was to make Council meetings civil and welcoming to Richmond Hill residents. It is important to me that everyone in Richmond Hill feels able to attend these meetings which shape our city. You can visit the City of Richmond Hill website and select “Council, Council Calendar” to get to the search page shown here and learn about what your elected official are discussing.

Please remember that you can attend Committee of the Whole meetings and Council Public Meetings in person at City Hall Council Chambers, watch live from home, or watch the recordings of any meetings you missed at the link below.

Thank you for your civic engagement.

Climate Action – Clean Transportation: EV Adoption

Between 2020 and 2024, electric vehicle (EV) registrations in Richmond Hill increased by 400%. The City has identified 24 prospective sites for EV charging stations. EV adoption can help achieve the City’s net-zero emissions while improving local air quality and public health. Federal EV incentives are now available.

Learn more about EVs
🔹 Zero tailpipe emissions and significantly more energy-efficient than gasoline vehicles.
🔹 Canadians spend about $3,000 per year on gasoline, while electricity for EVs typically costs only a few hundred dollars annually. On average, EV owners can save 40–50% in maintenance costs.
🔹 EV batteries generally have an average lifespan of 8–15 years.
🔹 Many EV models now exceed 300 km per charge, with some reaching up to 600 km. While cold weather can reduce range, EVs start reliably in winter, and gasoline vehicles also lose efficiency in colder temperatures.

Be Ready for Anything!

May is Emergency Preparedness Month, a time to make sure our households are ready for whatever comes our way. From power outages to severe storms, having a plan helps families stay safe and connected during unexpected events.

As you take stock of your family’s readiness this spring, here are a few preparedness steps to consider

  • build a 72‑hour emergency kit with water, non‑perishable food, medications, flashlights, and batteries
  • create a family communication plan so everyone knows how to reconnect if separated
  • store important documents safely in a waterproof, easy‑to‑grab location
  • sign up for local alerts to stay informed during severe weather or emergencies
  • check backup power sources such as battery packs for phones and medical devices
