As I write this newsletter Spring Break is upon us and this means Old Man Winter has scheduled his departure from Richmond Hill. It has certainly been a “good old traditional Canadian winter” with enough snow for the kids to enjoy and great skating on our Mill Pond (thanks to our staff for taking such great care of the pond ice), but like many of you I am ready for a change.
To me, the surest indication that spring is here is sap flowing from our Sugar Maple trees. This is a uniquely Canadian sign of spring- and a delicious one at that! On the subject of spring, festivities are taking place (or are about to take place) in Richmond Hill including Holi, Nowruz, Passover and Easter. These festivals help to welcome spring, a season for renewal. We are also just coming to the end of the Chinese New Year festivities so it is clear we have a lot of excuses to celebrate in our multi-cultural and multi-faith Richmond Hill.
We have had a lot going on at council including the passing of our 2015 Operating Budget as well as all the usual Council business. Please feel welcome to visit our Council Chambers in person during a Council Meeting, or watch council proceedings live streamed – for more information about council schedules or a link to our live streaming feed click here.
In this newsletter I have included two articles about insects – one we would like to have more of (Monarch Butterflies), and one we would like to have a lot less of (Emerald Ash Borer). I have also included a number of events that we have to look forward to in our community, and also reports from a couple of events that have just passed. All of these events add to the richness of life in Richmond Hill. As usual, I have included a brief report of the activities of council over the past month.
