Statement from Mayor David West- In Support of Our Iranian Community
In recent weeks, I stood in solidarity with Richmond Hill’s Iranian community and once again witnessed their pain, passion, and extraordinary resilience. Many in our community are directly affected by the horrific events unfolding in Iran — including the killing of protesters, all in the name of freedom to live in peace and harmony despite the horrific action demonstrated by the current regime.
Over the years, I have seen firsthand how events in Iran deeply impact our Iranian residents, neighbours, and friends and as Mayor of this fine city it breaks my heart. From the tragic downing of Flight PS752 in 2020, to the brutal killing of Mahsa Jina Amini in 2022 that ignited the Woman, Life, Freedom movement, and now the most recent uprising — these moments have left lasting scars, but have also strengthened resolve and unity toward positive change in Iran.
Myself as Mayor and this Richmond Hill Council remain committed to supporting the dignity and rights of all who choose to express themselves through peaceful demonstration. I extend my sincere thanks to York Regional Police for their continued professionalism and dedication in keeping our community safe.
To the courageous people of Iran: we honour your strength, resilience, and determination. We stand with you in your pursuit of justice, freedom, and self-determination.
Sincerely,

Mayor David West
